Referring to last Friday’s terrorist attack in Auckland, the New Zealand High Commission said yesterday that authorities in New Zealand and Sri Lanka are in touch with one another about the case.
Global security threats are complex and require international cooperation, the New Zealand High Commission said, issuing a media communiqué. “The New Zealand High Commission in Colombo has received a wide range of messages from members of the public, as well as community and religious organisations, in Sri Lanka about last Friday’s terrorist attack in Auckland”.
“These have been touching, and we have been particularly grateful for messages of concern for the victims of the attack and solidarity with their families and communities”.
“New Zealand is greatly enriched by its Sri Lankan community, and many New Zealanders have happily made Sri Lanka their home too. New Zealand and Sri Lanka have enjoyed decades of cooperation, including on security matters. That will continue in the period ahead”, the New Zealand HC further said. Department (CID) will question close associates of Ahamed Adhil Mohamed Samsudeen (32), the man who carried out the attack at a shopping mall in New Zealand, to gather more information regarding him and his activities. He was shot dead by Auckland Police after a stabbing spree that left seven people injured, three of them critically. The Police media unit said that investigations revealed that the attacker had left Sri Lanka as a student in 2011 on a student visa.
