Manusha suspects witch-hunt against him

By Saman Indrajith

Galle District SJB MP Manusha Nanayakkara told Parliament yesterday that he had been summoned to the CID with no reasons given, and that amounted to breach of his parliamentary privileges.

“This is an indication of attempts to silence legislators,” the MP said.

MP Nanayakkara requested Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to have the parliament’s Privileges Committee inquire into the matter and declare that the actions of the CID officers involved had violated his privileges as an MP.

The MP said that he had notified by the Narahanpita police, asking that he meet the officer in charge of the CID’s Digital Forensics Laboratory regarding an inquiry being carried out by the Computer Forensics Division. The notification did not indicate definitively what information was being sought from him, based on what complaint was made by whom, he said adding, “This is a violation of my rights as a civilian, and a violation of my parliamentary privileges.

“I think this is an attempt to stop MPs from taking up vital issues in Parliament. I consider this a witch-hunt.”
