Fernandopulle urges extension of lockdown by two more weeks

The lockdown should be extended by two more weeks, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Pandemics and COVID-19 Disease Control, Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle said yesterday.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Fernandopulle said that the final decision on the lockdown had to be taken by the COVID-19 Task Force. However, given that the number of COVID-19 cases were increasing, the lockdown should remain in place, she said.

“About 5,000 cases are reported daily. The real number must be 10 times more. There is no noticeable drop in new cases or deaths. We need to keep people at home. From what I see entire families are falling sick,” she said.

Dr. Fernandopulle said there had to be protocols and systems in place to ensure that the country secured the benefits of the lockdown. “We can’t keep opening up and locking down. We need to have systems and protocols in place to ensure we can ensure economic and social activities,” she said. (RK)
