Computers and Internet facilities to all Child Development Centres

700 computers worth 21 million rupees and internet facilities were donated to uplift the facilities for online education of children in all child development centres in the country.

This donation was made to 397 child development centres which includes 10,632 children throughout the country under the total sponsorship of a number of companies responding to a request made personally by Piyal Nishantha de Silva, the State Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Preschool and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services.

The symbolic handing over of computers took place today at the Ministry of Education in Battaramulla, Isurupaya with the participation of the Minister of Education, Dinesh Gunawardena.

The State Minister, Piyal Nishantha de Silva had made this request from the Indian business community in Sri Lanka with the objective of overcoming the challenges in online education of children in child development centres and enhancing children’s computer literacy.

Accordingly, the under mentioned companies came forward generously to donate these computers upon the request and due coordination of Captain A. Banerjee, Managing Director of Star Lanka Shipping.

In addition to this, internet facilities were also donated to all child development centres under the sponsorship of Dialog Axiata PLC.

Accordingly, the symbolic handing of the 700 computers to the Department of Probation and Child Care Services took place in line with the series of events in this year’s World Children’s Day programmes conducted under the theme, “Children before Everything”.

The symbolic handing of computers to Provincial Commissioners was also done by the Minister at the event.

Addressing the gathering, the minister said that this is the first time that such a large number of computers are donated for children under the care of the government.

The minister also said that we should not look at these children in a traditional viewpoint. The State Minister, Piyal Nishantha de Silva said that as the Minister, he always tries to give the children what they want to conquer the modern day world, and added that this is the first time 700 computers are donated as a sponsorship in a single day, hitting a world record.

This occasion was graced by Minister of Youth & Sports and State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development, Namal Rajapaksha, State Minister, Susil Premajayantha, General Secretary of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Sagara Kariyawasam, Attorney At Law, Secretary to the Ministry, Prof. Kapila Perera, State Secretary, Mrs. Kumari Jayasekara and Deputy Commissioner of Probation and Child Care Services, Mr. Sudheera Nilanga Withana.
