6,000 unauthorised PCR kits seized

A team of officers from the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) yesterday (17) found more than 6,000 PCR test kits worth around Rs.20 million imported into the country without being registered with the Authority.

The PCR kits had been found at warehouse belonging to a major company that imports medicinal drugs to the country in Colombo.

A team of officers from the NMRA raided a leading laboratory in Colombo 05 on the 15th and found 60 test kits based on information received that these PCR test kits were being used. Following the investigation, a team led by Chief Food and Drug Inspector and Head of Law Enforcement of the Medicine Regulatory Authority Amit Perera inspected the warehouse of the alleged drug importer.

The officers were able to find more than 6,000 PCR test kits. The import of PCR test kits used to identify Covid infected persons without registering with the Drug Regulatory Authority is strictly prohibited.
