Traders urge to keep Manning Market open

Vegetable stall owners at the Peliyagoda Manning Market Economic Centre (PMMEC) which was opened for wholesale traders on Tuesday requested the Government to keep the Manning Market Economic Centre open until next Sunday to enable vegetable traders in the economic centre to sell their produce to wholesale buyers visiting from all parts of the country.

PMMEC Organizer Anil Indrajith said since the Government allowed vegetable stall owners to keep the centre open on August 24 and 25, the traders were compelled to sell their vegetable stocks bought by farmers from distant areas at high prices and they had to destroy the remaining quantity after these two days.

“On one hand, we have to accept their price increases considering the large stocks of vegetable that were brought by poor farmers even the day before bearing a heavy transport cost and If this centre is open at least another four days then the vegetable prices would come down,” he predicted.

When interviewed, wholesale buyers complained that they are unable to sell vegetables in their towns after purchasing them at high prices and they are also of the view that the prices of vegetables would come down if the Economic Centre is kept open another few days.

They also complained that the price increase was done by wholesale traders in the Economic Centre and not by farmers with the intention of earning large profits.

According to wholesale traders the vegetable prices in the Manning Market Economic Centre are between the range of Rs. 170 to Rs.320 a kilogramme. Meanwhile, the Thambuththegama Economic Centre had reflected a different situation. Due to the limited number of wholesale buyers arrived at this Economic Centre the vegetable prices had drastically reduced and accordingly some varieties were sold between Rs. 8 to Rs.70 a kilogramme.
