Sri Lanka’s promising athlete Tharushi Karunaratne qualified to run in the Women’s 800m semi-finals following another splendid performance on the second day of the World Junior Athletics Championships, which continued in Nairobi, Kenya yesterday.

The 16-year-old athlete was placed third during the heats, returning a time of two minutes and 10.70s while Ethiopian Mebrith Mokonen with 2.08.62s was placed first.

However, Sri Lanka’s Shanika Lakshani who also took part in the 800m heats was placed fifth with a time of 2.20.37s and could not reach the qualifying mark of the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan sprinter Medhani Jayamanne after her setback in the 100m final on the previous day will be determined to make amends when she competes in the Women’s 200m heats today. Coach Umanga Surendra said that he is expecting an improved performance from Jayamanne when she competes in her pet event.

Jayamanne will compete in the second heat, along with Tokyo Olympics finalist Beatrice Masilingi of Namibia and Marta Zimna of Poland.
