Ten Party leaders call for three week lockdown

Leaders of ten constituent Parties in the government have written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa urging him to immediately lock down the country for at least three weeks to control the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus.

In a letter to the President, Party Leaders have suggested seven steps to be taken to control the pandemic.

Despite being aware of the impact of the lockdown on the country to the economy, the Party leaders have stated in the relevant letter that they are confident that the number of COVID-19 patients will not be reduced to a level that the hospital system can afford without the lockdown of the country in the current situation.

The Party leaders also have asked the President to take action against officials who deliberately distort COVID-19 statistics, regardless of rank.

They have also suggested to the President that an all-Party mechanism be set up to deal with this as it is a national disaster and that a committee of experts from the health and economic sectors be appointed to advise it.
