Kandy remembers sportsman Lakshman Kadirgamar

Kandy sports lovers remember sportsman Lakshman Kadirgamar on his 16th death anniversary which fell on August 12. He was a lawyer by profession and statesman. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. from 1994 to 2005 Born on 12th April1932 he received his primary education at C.M.S. Ladies’ College,Colombo

and then joined Trinity College, Kandy where he did well in sports.

He captained the first eleven cricket team in 1950, and some of his teammates at cricket during his playing days were P. Deheeragoda, Lakshman.Jayakody, R.G.D.S Misso, Eustace. Rulach, C. Shanmuganathan, G.E. Wijeratne,N.S.Madugalle, S.P. Silva, J.G.G. Tennakoon, A. Gunanasekaram. Then in the year1949 he won the batting prize.

He was also a top class ruggerite, and was an expert in ball handling and running with the ball. He won his rugger colorus in the year 1949 along with Bertie Dias, M.B. Ellepola. M. Hermon, D.S.Ratwatte, Eustace. Rulach, R.W.. Tucker and Upali. Wijeratne. He played in the annual Bradby Shield Encounters during his playing days.

In athletics too he did well and winner of the first Duncan White Challenge Cup for Athletics in 1948 and in the year 1949 was placed first in the 129 yards hurdles in the Public schools meet with a timing of 15.7 seconds and in the C.A. Championship was second in 120 yards hurdles. He won his school colours in the year 1949 along with Bertie Dias and the coveted Lion in 1950 that was after 13 years a lion was won in athletics.In recognition of his all-round performance in academic and extra – curricular activities, he was given the highest award the prestigious Ryde Gold medal for the best all round student of 1950. He was also the Senior Prefect of Trinity College.

In 1950, he studied law at the University of Ceylon and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1953.He passed the examinations of the Ceylon Law College with flying colours and was admitted to the Ceylon Bar in 1955. He later pursued his graduate studies at Balliol College at the University of Oxford, where he became President of the Oxford Union in 1959 and obtained a Bachelor of Letters (B.Litt.) in 1960.
