Jackson begins work on latest cinematic venture

Actor turned film director Jackson Anthony is someone who has always delivered something unique to cinema enthusiasts.

From ‘Aba’ to films like ‘Address Naa’ and ‘Eka Gei Sokari’, Jackson has based each of his productions on diverse themes. His newest film is going to be based on a Jathaka tale – a lesser know Jathaka tale titled ‘Sambula Jathakaya’. This is the 511th Jathaka tale in the 550 Jathaka Katha.

Going under the name ‘Devi Sambula’ the film brings to life a series of picturesque sequences based on Sambula Jathakaya. The exception about this Jathaka tale is that unlike in other Jathaka tales, women have not been projected in a negative light.

Another unique feature about this film is that it would be done in two languages: a Sinhala version and an English version. This is the second time in Sinhala cinema history that the same film will be brought out in two languages. The first was in 1951 as ‘Sangavuna Pilithura’ came out in Sinhala and in Tamil as ‘Kusumalatha’. ‘Devi Sambula’ will be brought before the international audience as ‘Sambula’.

Three characters dominate the film. Sambula Devi will be played by Udari Warnakulasooriya. Pubudu Chathuranga will portray Prince Sothisena while Akhila Dhannudhara will be Danawa Raksha.

Rohan de Silva will produce this film on behalf of Come Mc.

Harold Karunatileke is the production executive. Dhammika Pathiratne does the still photography. Venuka Yasas Sri Wickramarachchi is in charge of the costume department. Chatra Weeraman does the 3D animations.

The lyrics are by Professor Sunil Ariyaratne. Amarasiri Peries and Madhavee Wathsala have rendered their voices for the songs. Harsha Manjula does the make up.
