Hefty bail for man who posted fake photos on social media

A 36-year-old resident of Nugegoda was taken into custody on Monday (23) by the Police Computer Crimes Investigation Division in connection with posting fake photographs to social media networks, using photographs from a foreign country and indicating they were locally taken.

The photos had been uploaded with a comment, “dead bodies are piling up, don’t we have any refuge”. The suspect’s post implied that the photos were depicting wards at the Kalubowila hospital.

The suspect was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court and released on surety bail of Rs.100,000 and ordered to be present in court on December 16. Charges are to be filed against him under the Quarantine Act, the Penal Code of Sri Lanka and the Computer Crimes Act.
