'Annadata' lathicharged in Haryana's Karnal, Opposition lambasts BJP govt

Karnal:

The Haryana Police on Saturday lathi-charged the protesting farmers at the Bastara Toll-Plaza area in Karnal. The farmers were protesting against a meeting of the BJP over the upcoming municipal polls chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Following this, farmers’ body Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader, Rakesh Tikait, who is spearheading the farmers’ protest against the Centre’s three farm laws, said that all the roads will be blocked till 5 pm in the state to demonstrate against the lathi charge by the police in Karnal. “To protest the baton-charge in Haryana’s Karnal, all the roads will be blocked till 5 pm in the state,” BKU leader Rakesh Tikait said.

Opposition Congress hit out at the BJP accusing it of intimidating farmers. “Coward BJP, shameless BJP. The Khattar government of Haryana wants to intimidate the farmers through bloodshed and want to break their courage. But those who have Bhagat Singh on their chest and Gandhi in their mind, they will not be afraid of BJP’s gimmicks,” said the Congress.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted a photograph – of a man whose white kurta pajama was splattered with blood. In his tweet, Gandhi wrote “Again the blood of farmers is shed… and India bows its head in shame,”

Shiromani Akali Dal President and Member of Parliament from Ferozepur Sukhbir Singh Badal also condemned the incident. He tweeted “@Akali_Dal_ strongly condemns the brutal lathicharge on farmers protesting against 3 farm laws in Karnal. This is NO WAY to treat Annadata that too just for demonstrating against CM to have their voices heard. Photos of injured farmers are heartbreaking. BJP has lost the plot.”

Former Chief Minister of Haryana and Congress leader Bhupinder S Hooda also slammed the BJP government over the incident.
