Afghanistan: Turkey holds first talks with Taliban in Kabul

Kabul:

Even as the US and NATO forces withdraw from Afghanistan, chaos has gripped the country with the Taliban ousting the Afghan government and capturing Kabul.

Like other NATO nations, Turkey is also evacuating its citizens from Afghanistan while trying to fish in the troubled Afghan waters along with close ally Pakistan.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey has held its first talks with Taliban in Kabul. Turkey is still assessing the Taliban’s offer to run the Kabul

“We had our first talks with the Taliban, which lasted 3.5 hours. If necessary, we will have the opportunity to have such talks again. The first priority in Afghanistan is the normalization of life to ensure the safety of the people. And the void of authority must be filled. An inclusive and empowered administration, reflecting all sections of the society, must be formed in Afghanistan,”

Erdogan said.

He noted that Turkey appears cautiously optimistic about the messages conveyed by Taliban leaders.

“Obviously, the ensuing period will be shaped by the practices, actions and actions of the Taliban rather than their words,” he said.

The Turkish president said this ambiguity, already grappling with a two-decade-long war, the coronavirus pandemic, drought and economic problems, has added to the burden of the war-torn Afghan people.
