Police seek assistance of Courts to ban certain websites

In the wake of the sexual exploitation of a 15-year-old girl the Police have sought the assistance of the Courts to ban a number of websites that are used for online prostitution.

The matter has been referred to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) to identify any such websites. The Police are also making further investigations to identify such websites.

The Attorney General has from time to time appointed several State Counsels, including an Additional Solicitor General, to advise and expedite investigations and to accelerate them and file charges against wrongdoers, Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated.

The Police have so far have arrested 44 people in connection with the rape and sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl and selling her for money via websites.

In addition the police arrested five people in the past week on charges of releasing nude photos and videos online.

Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the suspects were arrested during investigations into complaints received by the Police Cyber Crimes Division.

A 26-year-old man was arrested in Pita Kotte, another in Rajagiriya and a 23-year-old was arrested in Poojapitiya in Kandy.

A 39-year-old man was arrested in the Nampamunuwa area in Piliyandala and a 31-year-old man in the Gampaha area. The 31-year-old man was arrested on a complaint that he had accessed another person’s Facebook account, changed his password and posted obscene photos, the Police Media Spokesman said.

The suspects will be produced before court and further investigations will be carried out, Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated.
