The total number of the COVID-19 delta variant infections reported from Sri Lanka has risen to 43 with the identification of six more patients from the Kesbewa Jamburaliya area.
These infections have been reported from people who worked in a private garment factory on the Kambawa Jamburaliya Lullawala Road. Following PCR tests on 186 employees of the factory it has been revealed that 120 are infected with COVD 19.
Authorities had sent 20 randomly selected samples from the above 120 to the University of Sri Jayewardenepura for sequential genetic analysis where it has been confirmed that six are infected with the Delta variant of the virus.
The factory employs more than 1,000 people, of which 85 percent live in rented accommodation around Kesbewa.
