LG bodies directed to ensure cattle slaughter ban

The Local Government and Provincial Councils’ Ministry yesterday directed all Local Government bodies to stop cattle slaughter.

Ministry Secretary S.D.A.B. Boralessa said all Local Government authorities have been informed to act in compliance with the Government policy with regard to cattle slaughter.

“Steps have been taken to bring amendments to three Acts with regard to the cattle slaughter and these Acts would be forwarded to the Cabinet for approval soon,” Boralessa said.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa presented a Cabinet paper seeking Cabinet approval for banning cattle slaughter last year. “The Cabinet of Ministers has banned the slaughter of cattle and the decision was communicated to all Local Government bodies.

However, the decision was not implemented,” he said, adding that all Local Government bodies should abide by the decision taken by the Cabinet in this regard.
