The Government is prepared to remove the salary anomalies in the teacher and principal services which existed for over 24 years. Education Minister Professor G.L.Peiris is to submit the relevant proposal to the Cabinet today.
The Education Minister through this Cabinet memorandum has sought the approval for the implementation of the recommendations made by the National Salaries Commission on July 18 with regard to the removal of salary anomalies in the teacher and principal services.
Minister Peiris through his proposal is to inform the Cabinet that the teachers are not on higher salary scales in Sri Lanka even though teachers in the South Asian and European countries are placed in higher scale in comparison to the other members of the State service.“The Government is considering to prioritize the removal of salary anomalies of the teachers and the principals in recognition of their invaluable service in moulding the future generation of the country,” the Minister’s proposal states.
Government sources said that the Education Minister has sought additional allocations from the Treasury for the implementation of the recommendations of the Commission.A number of proposals and recommendations were submitted to resolve this issue from time to time but none of them were implemented
The Education Minister submitted a Cabinet Paper aiming at removing the salary anomalies in the teacher and principal service on February 24 last year. He had informed the Cabinet of Ministers about this issue on November 27 last year.
