China donates another 1.6 million Sinopharm vaccine doses

China donated another 1.6 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccines to Sri Lanka.The consignment of the vaccines arrived at the Katunayake International Airport onboard Sri Lankan Airlines flights at 5.30 am yesterday. The stock of vaccines was handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the President’s Office  by the Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhen Hong together with a stock of syringes.

This stock of vaccines was thereafter handed over to the health authorities for the inoculation of persons over the age of 30 in the North-East.

The Sinopharm vaccines constitute 72% of the country’s vaccines administered so far.

President Rajapaksa thanked the Chinese Government for their immense support in boosting Sri lanka’s vaccination drive having donated 2.7 million doses so far.

On March 31 Sri Lanka received 600,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, while another 500,000 doses was received on May 26th and 1.6 million doses was received yesterday.

The President expressed confidence that all eligible persons over 30 could be vaccinated by the end of August, adding that tourism activities could resume by September.

Therefore, he invited Chinese tourists to visit Sri Lanka once the country is opened to tourists.
