Cabinet approves to establish video evidence recording units to record evidence of child abuse victims

Cabinet of Ministers has granted their consent to establish nine video evidence recording units at the provincial level to record evidence of child abuse victims, Co-cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

The evidences given by the children those who have been subject to various abuses and been used about such incidents are important at the judicial process. Since, such victimized children have to face various inconveniences at providing evidences before the court publicly, Sri Lankan legal system has been furnished with provisions to take these evidences as video recordings subject to provisions in Evidence (Special Provisions) Act No. 32 of 1999.

Accordingly, an evidence video recording unit has been established in the year 2001 and those
evidences are taken only in Colombo at present within National Child Protection Authority.
