Director of the Allergy, Immunity and Cell Biology Unit at the Sri Jayewardenepura University Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said an individual who had contracted the B.1.617.2 variant of the coronavirus has been identified from Colombo.
This is the highly transmissible B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant of the coronavirus.
He said that, the COVID variant has been reported to be 50% faster in transmission than that of the B 117 variant and is highly transmissible.
He further said the variant is more severe and evades one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
