Efforts to clean affected beach from MV X-PRESS PEARL fire

The Navy, along with other stakeholders, is continuing the beach cleaning efforts, which began on 26th May 2021, to remove debris from the coastal areas affected by the MV X-PRESS PEARL fire.

The beach areas of Uswetakeiyawa, Elenegoda, Sarakkuwa and Kepungoda laying within the 9 km affected coastline from Uswetakeiyawa to Kepungoda, were heavily polluted by ship-debris. The beach cleaning efforts carried out by the Navy in aforesaid coastal areas has made way to handover more than 1500 tons of debris from fire-hit ship to the Marine Environment Protection Authority as of now (17th June 2021).

The photo story depicts the condition of the heavily polluted beach area from Sarakkuwa to Kepungoda, separating from 27th May to 16th June 2021, and it clearly reflects how the Navy’s beach cleaning effort producing desired results.
