UNP urges rapid flood relief

Former Minister Vajira Abeywardena, the Chairman of the United National Party, requested the Government to take immediate action to pay compensation to the people affected by the recent inclement weather.

Speaking to the media yesterday he stated that the people affected by the Corona pandemic in Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Colombo and Gampaha have been dealt another blow by way of floods and landslides caused by heavy rain.

He stressed that necessary steps should be taken to expedite the payment of compensation for all damage.

The disaster caused by the heavy rains in the last few days has already affected more than 5,000 families in the Galle District and two people have been killed in the Nagoda area, he pointed out.

“If steps had been taken to inform certain divisions and districts in advance, the loss of life and the damage to certain businesses could have been minimized,” he added.

Abeywardena urged the Government to provide relief as soon as possible.
