Nurses launch trade union action today

All Ceylon Nurses' Union General Secretary H.M.S.B. Mediwatte said that the union will launch a trade union action today (31).

It will continue for 24 hours from 7 am on May 31 to 7 am on June 1, Mediwatta said. The demands made by the nurses have been ignored, Mediwatte said.

He said that most of the nurses continue working under the minimum facilities at many hospitals, and they have not received the COVID-19 vaccines yet and only 5 per cent of the nurses receive the accident allowance.

Mediwatte said that even nurses who are directly exposed to COVID-19 patients have not been vaccinated. “Our nurses have been dealing with this risk for a year. Even their family members, including the entire healthcare system, are at risk. Pregnant nurses cannot even easily apply for leave. They have not received vaccines, too” Mediwatte said.
