Sri Lanka Navy has deployed 10 relief teams in flood prone areas in the Western and Southern Provinces to provide relief and rescue people from the risk of flooding due to heavy rains. Accordingly, Navy relief teams were able to rescue 06 flood victims with the overflowing of the Gin Ganga in the Udugama area, Galle last night.
Incidentally, the teams of Navy Rapid Response Rescue & Relief Unit (4RU) rescued 03 men and 01 woman who remained in a tree, swept away by flood water after falling from a raft, as a result of floods in the Udugama area, Galle due to the rising water level of the Gin Ganga last night. Further, the Navy rescue teams also reached out to 02 women who were trapped in a house due to flash floods, in the same area.
Meanwhile, the Navy has deployed 03 relief teams covering Paragoda, Bulathsinhala and Walallawita areas in the Kalutara district, 06 teams in Udugama, Thawalama, Nagoda and Baddegama areas in the Galle district and 01 relief team in Athuraliya area in the Matara district taking the total teams engaging in relief operations to 10, with a view to provide relief measures during a possible flood risk, with the rising of water levels in Kalu, Gin and Nilwala rivers.
Besides, the Navy stands ready to deploy relief teams where necessary, in a bid to provide relief to the public during the prevailing adverse weather condition.
