Chinese President announces donation of another 500,000 Sinopharm doses to SL

Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced the donation of another stock of 500,000 Sinopharm vaccines to Sri Lanka to effectively arrest the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka, a release issued by the Government Information Department said.

"Chinese President Xi Jinping has informed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of his decision to donate another 500,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine to Sri Lanka to fight the current spread of COVID-19, Principal Advisor to the President Lalith Weeratunga stated yesterday," the release said.

The newly donated stock of vaccines will reach the island by May 23 (Sunday).

Weeratunga added that Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong conveyed the decision of the Chinese President to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today.

"In addition, a stock of three million Sinopharm vaccines ordered by the Government will arrive in Sri Lanka during next week," Weeratunga added.”

Meanwhile, Chinese Embassy Spokesman Luo Chong when contacted by the Daily News said that Sri Lanka has placed a commercial order with Sinopharm for the purchase of 14 million vaccine doses.

He said that the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Sinopharm have already finalised the commercial agreement for the purchase of 14 million doses.
