Ven. Rathana Thera seeks Commission to protect forest cover

Parliamentarian Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera yesterday said that he would make a request to the President to appoint a Commission aiming at protecting the country’s forest cover. MP Athuraliye Rathana Thera speaking at a tree planting programme held at Sri Dalada Maligawa yesterday said the country should have a national policy on how housing and development projects are implemented while protecting the forest cover.He said that the programme, which will be launched in Sri Lanka will be expanded to other countries in collaboration with 100 international organisations to plant 80 million saplings worldwide.

The people living in all parts of the world have to face floods, drought and earthslips due to the damage caused to the environment.

Ven. Rathana Thera said further that it was more important to protect the environment of the village and meet its basic needs than turning the village into a city and making the country a concrete city.
