Religious activities restricted

Health Services Director General Dr.Asela Gunawardene yesterday stated that all religious congregational activities will be prohibited till further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A statement issued by the Director General mentioned that the number of devotees allowed to enter religious places at any given time should be limited to 50 percent of the maximum space available and a maximum of 25 persons at a time.

“These guidelines have been issued based on the fact that the country has reached pandemic alert level-3.” he said.

He further said that the Health Ministry has decided to further control public gatherings due to the increase of COVID positive cases daily. The Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry has also issued a set of guidelines inline with the decision taken by the Health Authorities to restrict religious congregational activities.

Accordingly, a decision has been taken to suspend their prayers and congregational activities in all mosques until further notice. A decision has also been taken to close all mosques in areas declared as isolated or restricted till further notice.
