PM calls for strong State banking system to face challenges

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stated yesterday that the State banking system should be further strengthened.

The Prime Minister pointed this out during a lengthy discussion with the officials of the Pragathi Bank Employees Union at the Prime Minister's Office in the Parliament Complex.

The meeting was held to discuss ways to further strengthen the State banking sector in the face of current challenges and to find solutions to the problems of the employees.Members of the Union thanked the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for restoring the officer retirement pensions of the People's Bank, Bank of Ceylon and National Savings Bank in 2014 as the then President, which had been suspended since 1996.

The Prime Minister also focused on resolving the continuing problems in pensions of employees.

As the Minister of Finance, the Prime Minister pointed out that he will be taking steps in the future too to resolve the existing problems in the State banks.

Minister S.M. Chandrasena, Minister of State Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Chaminda Kularatne, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister, Priyantha Rathnayake, Coordinating Secretary to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs, the Union President Nishantha Samarasinghe, General Secretary AK Bandara, were also present.
