Kilinochchi troops raid illegal mining, logging

Troops under the Security Forces Commander Kilinochchi, from May 2020 to April 2021 have been able to apprehend more than 40 suspects during raids for illegal sand mining, logging and transport, smuggling of cannabis and other narcotics.

The Army's Directorate of Media said the troops have been able to capture all these illegal

activities with the supervision and the coordination provided by the respective police stations, officials of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Department of Forest Conservation, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, the Excise Department and other relevant authorities.

Troops seized 48 cubes of illegally mined sand trucks and have prevented 28 attempts for illegal sand mining by these suspects. Over 35 litres of fully distilled illicit liquor and 8,815 litres of fermented spirits used for brewing illicit liquor. Moreover, 60 drugs capsules, 185.35 kgs of smuggled local cannabis and Kerala cannabis and about hundreds of unlawfully felled Satinwood and Palu logs," Media Director Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne said in a press release.

These operations are still being conducted according to the policies implemented by the government and on the instructions of the Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander General Shavendra Silva together with the Kilinochchi Security Forces Commander, Major General Harendra Ranasinghe. The Kilinochchi troops have conducted these operations in collaboration with relevant agencies and authorities active participation.
