ITSSL urges users to add strong passwords, two-factor authentication

The Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka (ITSSL) has urged Facebook users to use stronger passwords and activate two-factor authentication with immediate effect in order to ensure the safety of their accounts. The warning was issued after a hacker made the personnel data of over 553 million worldwide Facebook users public in a hacking forum last Saturday.

Sensitive personal details such as the phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, bios, and email addresses of users across 106 countries have been exposed.

The stolen details have been made public for free. Over 32 million accounts in the United States, 11 million in the UK, and 6 million in India have been exposed by the hacker.

“There could be the personal details of Sri Lankan users as well. Therefore, local users have to be vigilant about possible misuse of their details”, ITSSL added.
