The Police arrested five Chinese nationals on Tuesday in connection with an illegal gambling site at Lauris Road in Bambalapitiya during a special raid, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said.
The raid was jointly conducted by Bambalapitiya and Kollupitiya Police.
A sum of Rs. 1 million and 88,500 and 2,600 Chinese Yuan were taken into custody from the gambling site. The suspects were produced before the Magistrate’s Court along with the money.
Police are conducting further investigations.
The Police Spokesman said gambling is prohibited as per the Sri Lankan law and permission must be obtained prior to operating a gambling site.
He added that the Police have also received information of operating illegal gambling sites in village level during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period. He added that such places would be raided. He added that gambling also poses a health risk as it helps the spread of COVID-19.
