Fake news lands teen in trouble

A 19 year-old teen was arrested for circulating fake news on social media from the Kahatapitiya area by the Gampola Police yesterday.

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect was arrested following a tip-off given by intelligence units and the mobile phone used by the suspect has also been taken into custody by Police.

The suspect has posted various fake news through social media to create disharmony between certain ethnic and religious groups, he said.

The DIG said stern legal action would be taken against the suspect as he committed an offence under Section 120 of the Penal Code, Section 98 of the Police Ordinance and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act (ICCPR). Gampola Police are continuing investigations.
