Brain dead teen's organs transplanted at three hospitals

The organs of a teenager who was declared brain dead following an accident have given a new lease of life to three patients who were waiting for transplant in three hospitals.

Pasindu Gimhana Rathnayake (19), from Mawanella sustained serious injuries in an accident and was being treated at the ICU of Trincomalee General Hospital.

He was travelling to Trincomalee with his mother. Doctors pronounced him brain dead the other day and his relatives expressed the wish to donate the organs.

The organs were harvested from the youth and were transported to three hospitals. His Liver was donated to a patient at Colombo National Hospital and his kidneys were donated to patients at the Kandy National Hospital and Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

The kidney transplant surgeries have been been performed by consultant surgeon Dr.P.R. Harischandra at the Kandy General Hospital and consultant surgeon Dr.Avantha Marasinghe at the Anuradhapura General Hospital. The liver transplant surgery has been performed by consultant surgeons Ruwan Dissanayake and Rohan Sirisena at the Colombo National Hospital.
