Tissue and blood tests to ascertain cause for patient’s death

Tissues, blood and other specimens of a person who died on March 14 following a rapid decrease in the platelet count, would be tested to ascertain if the rapid decrease in the platelets was due to a complication caused by the Covid vaccine, that he took two weeks before his death.

Assistant Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Samadhi Dandeniyaarachchi conducted the post mortem on the death of a 40-year-old hotel worker S. Srimal, a resident of Embilipitiya. She said that a tissue and blood test would be carried out to ascertain whether the cause of the rapid decrease in the platelets of the deceased hotel worker was due to a complication caused by the COVID-19 vaccine.

The hotel employee was transferred to the Karapitiya Hospital on March 13 due to a rapid decrease in platelets and died the following day. The hotel employee had been given the COVID-19 vaccine about two weeks before the death. She also said according to the reports, the hotel worker had been suffering from fever, body aches, headaches, vomiting and low platelet counts since the injection.

“He did not have any other illness,” AJMO Dandeniyaarachchi said, “This person had blood flowing to his brain. The post-mortem examination revealed that blood clots had formed in other parts of the body. We cannot say for sure if the COVID-19 vaccine caused this complication. His disease was not Dengue either. Tests should be done to find out why the platelets had dropped so rapidly.” Tissue and blood tests and bone marrow tests are scheduled to be done to confirm the matter.
