PS Chairman granted bail in alleged assault case

Members of the Karuwalagaswewa Pradeshiya Sabha staged a protest against the Karuwalagaswewa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman who had allegedly assaulted a person for raising issues of the area during the Gama Samaga Pilisandarak programme attended by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa recently.

The victim had apprised the President at the meeting about a dilapidated road in the area and appealed to the President to make early arrangements to repair it.

The victim was identified as retired Army Sergeant Major D. Jayaratne, a resident of Wijayapura, Karuwalagaswewa. Karuwalagaswewa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Nimal Jayasiri Bandara is alleged to have carried out the attack.

The victim had lodged a complaint with the Karuwalagaswewa Police stating that the attack had taken place on February 26 at the Tabbowa junction near the 7th mile post of Karuwalagaswewa.

Jayaratne said that the Chairman had allegedly attacked him on February 20 because he was angry with him for notifying the President that the Weerapura road in the area had not been repaired for 50 years.

Karuwalagaswewa Police have arrested the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Nimal Jayasiri Bandara and released him on Police bail, Police said. Karuwalagaswewa Police are investigating.
