‘Motorcyclists cause the highest number of road accidents’

Motorcyclists are responsible for the highest number of road accidents in the country, the National Council for Road Safety (NCRS) in its latest report said.

“During the last five years, 13,550 road accidents happened and motorcyclists have caused about 5,592 accidents. About 5,677 motor cyclists had died in the accidents,” the report said.

Many of those who died had been under the influence of liquor. High speed was another major reason for these deaths. In 2018, about 1,255 motorcyclists had died of road accidents and in 2019, it was 1,098. In 2020, 950 motorcyclists had died in accidents.

“Rs. 12 million has been allocated by the Government to educate motorcyclists in this regard this year,” Kurunegala District Senior Divisional Secretary W.E.Jayatilake said.
