‘Foreign exchange worth Rs. 5,000m saved by producing drugs here’

The Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company (SPMC) is manufacturing one variety of drugs monthly for the last six months and saved foreign exchange worth Rs.5,000 million, Pharmaceuticals Production State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana said.

He said that various pharmaceutical accessories including face masks will be manufactured here before long. He said that only the masks imported in last December are available in the market. The State Minister said that on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, local industrialists have been encouraged to promote their products.

“We recently commissioned a company to produce face masks in Opatha, Kotugoda via Chinese technology. He said that the company was a public-private venture by the SPMC and Senstronics (Pvt.) Limited. ‘A number of public-private pharmaceutical manufacturing ventures will be set up in near future in Anuradhapura, Oymaduwa and Horana Production Zones,’ he said.
