A nine-year-old girl who was reportedly possessed, had died due to being caned during a ritual at a treatment centre, the police stated.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the tragedy had been reported to the Meegahawatte Police on Saturday night where a nine-year-old girl had been taken to a treatment centre in the vicinity of her house, by the mother. “The child is said to have been possessed. The child had been treated with some oil therapy and a woman known to perform witchcraft at the treatment centre had caned the child. However, the child had been unconscious and had been taken to the Biyagama Hospital. Upon admission, the doctors at the hospital had confirmed that the child was dead.”
Accordingly, the Meegahawatte Police has initiated investigations into the incident and the woman who had treated the girl had been arrested by the Biyagama Police.
The Postmortem and the Magisterial Inquest was scheduled to be conducted on the body of the child.
Further investigations are underway.
