An agreement was signed yesterday to locally produce and procure insulators needed for electric fences that mitigate the Human-Elephant conflict, in the presence of State Ministers Prasanna Ranaweera and Wimalaweera Dissanayake.

The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) has certified the effectiveness of these locally manufactured insulators. These insulators have been produced by local companies with a higher specification than imported insulators.

Insulators required for the construction of electric fences as elephant barriers have been imported from New Zealend, China and several other countries spending massive amounts of foreign exchange.

It has been reported that the country has spent nearly Rs.1000 million to import insulators from these countries. We will be able to save massive amounts in foreign exchange with the commencement of local manufacture of insulators.

Cane, Brass, Clay, Furniture and Rural Industry Promotion State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera said the Government has decided to extend the electric fencing up to 1,400km with the aim of mitigating the human-elephant conflict. Therefore, this project will boost the national economy while helping to uplift the livelihoods of local manufactures as well as save foreign exchange," the Minister said.

The agreement was signed by Clay, Cane. Brass, Furniture and Rural Industry State Ministry. Secretary A.B.Vijitha Bandaranayake and Wildlife Protection State Ministry Secretary retired Major General W.P.P.Fernando.
