Wet weather to continue

The Meteorology Department warned that the inclement weather may continue with showery weather conditions expected over most parts of the country today due to the low atmospheric disturbance over the country.

In a weather advisory, the Department warned that showers or thunderstorms are expected over most parts of the country with heavy showers forecasted over 150mm at some places in the Northern, Easter, North Central and Central Provinces. This is while heavy showers above 100mm can be expected in other places.

Meanwhile, wind speeds may increase up to 50 kmph at times over the North and North Central Provinces and in the Trincomalee district. The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.

The Disaster Management Centre has issued an alert calling on people living in low-lying areas of the Kala-Oya valley at Karuwalgaswewa and Wanathawilluwa to be vigilant of flood like conditions due the opening of the spill gates.

In addition to the Kala-Oya, the spill gates of the Thabbowa, Rajanganaya and Deduru Oya reservoirs have been opened owing to the inclement weather. The Irrigation department warned of minor floods due to the opening of the spill gates. Meanwhile vehicular movement from Puttalam to Eluwankulama via Mannar has been restricted owing to inundation.
