A student was electrocuted by an unauthorised power line drawn from the main power supply to operate a water pump to supply water to a vegetable cultivation, the Sooriyawewa Police said.The deceased has been identified as Werahera Arachchige Kanishka Prageeth Kumara (15), a Grade 10 student of Sooriyawewa National School and a resident of Sooriyawewa.
The Sooriyawewa Coroner following an inquest into his death revealed that the boy was driving his father's cattle back home when he was struck by an electric wire that had been hooked from the main electrical system.
The Coroner said the boy had died of electrocution.
The suspect who is responsible for the illegal power tapping was arrested by the Sooriyawewa Police and was to be produced before the Hambantota Magistrate's Court.
Sooriyawewa Police are conducting further investigations.
