The project to convert 1,000 schools that are owned by the Provincial Councils into national schools will be implemented in stages, State Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
He said was responding to MP S.M. Marikkar during the Question Round.
He said that in the first phase, 123 schools will be converted into national schools. Five schools in the Colombo District will also be included in the first phase, he said.
However, he said that the personal files of the teachers employed at the schools that are to be converted into national schools, need to be obtained by the State Service from the Provincial State Service, adding that this process takes some time.
