Expert Committee to probe Muthurajawela destruction

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed Ministry Secretary to Dr. Anil Jasinghe to appoint an expert committee to conduct a full study on environmental damage in the Muthurajawela Wet Sanctuary.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said a full study should be carried out on the environmental destruction caused by certain individuals in the Muthurajawela Wet Sanctuary in the the Colombo and the Gampaha District. Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe to appoint a committee consisting of experts with extensive knowledge to conduct a full study on the environmental damage caused by these individuals to the Muthurajawela Wet Sanctuary so far.

The Minister emphasised that a person claiming to be a company is currently occupying about 700 acres of the Muthurajawela wetland and the destruction caused to Muthurajawela by other individuals is not insignificant. Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith had recently made a statement regarding illegal landfills and acquisitions taking place destroying the Muthurajawela sanctuary. The report will focus on illegal acquisitions and reclamations carried out by a person and suggest appropriate measures to save Muthurajawela from destruction.

Minister Amaraweera visited the Muthurajawela Sanctuary area recently to investigate illegal activities taking place there. It was revealed that underworld thugs as well as some businessmen and government officials were behind illegal landfills in Muthurajawela.
