Mahara riot: CID records statements from officials, inmates

Police Media Spokespereson DIG Ajith Rohana said that statements have been recorded from 26 persons by the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) over the recent riot at the Mahara Prison.

The CID had recorded statements from eight doctors of the Prison Hospital, two male attendants, ten prison officers including the Chief Jailor and six inmates who sustained injuries in the incident, he added.

The Government has begun a multi-pronged inquiry into the violent clash at the Mahara Prison that took the lives of nine inmates and injured more than 70 others including two Prison Officers.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), on the orders of the IGP and the Defence Secretary, has launched a full scale inquiry while Justice Minister Ali Sabry, PC, has also appointed a five-member Committee chaired by former High Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena to investigate the incident.

In addition, a Committee headed by the Prison Reforms Ministry Secretary has also begun a probe.

Unrest broke out at several prisons in the country over the past couple of weeks mainly due to emergence of the COVID-19 prison cluster which had exceeded the 1,000 mark at the time of this agitation last Sunday evening.
