Geminid yesterday and today

Sri Lankans had the opportunity to witness the most intense meteor shower of the year, the Geminid meteor shower yesterday (13) and this morning (14).

About 60 to 120 meteors have been expected per hour from the meteor shower.

Astronauts said that 3,200 Phaethon is the source for the Geminid and the meteor shower on December 13 and 14 every year.

Janaka Adassuriya, an astronomer at the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Advanced Technology, said the meteor shower was named Geminid because it appears to emanate from the Gemini constellation.

He said the meteor shower did not require a telescope to be viewed and could be seen with the naked eye. He said that to see a large number of meteors and for a clear vision of the meteor shower, it should be viewed between 12 pm and 4 am.
