Full probe into minor tremors

Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GS&MB) Chairman Anura Walpola yesterday said that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted into the minor earth tremors reported from time to time around the Victoria reservoir on the directive of Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera

“Although it was stated that four minor tremors were reported around Kandy, only one minor tremor was reported from the Earth’s interior.

Sensors mounted on the Victoria Reservoir dam did not record earthquakes,” Walpola said.

He said the other three tremors were not reported from the interior of the Earth, according to Victoria Reservoir sensors.

He said that the tremors may not have occurred internally, but it could have happened externally. However, the facts regarding this are not taken lightly and an extensive investigation is being carried out by experts from various fields, the Chairman said.

He said the University of Peradeniya, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, as well as the Mahaweli Authority are to be consulted for this purpose on the instructions of the Minister of Environment.

He said the report of the panel of experts would focus on dolomite mining and related explosions and further action would be taken in line with the report.
