Eleven Mahara riot dead identified

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said 11 inmates who had died in the Mahara prison unrest have been identified by the relatives of the deceased inmates.

DIG Rohana said the bodies are placed at the Ragama Teaching Hospital mortuary. He stressed that the court had ordered to conduct the autopsies of the inmates by a five member panel consisting of four Consultant Judicial Medical Officers and a Ballistics expert from the Government Analyst’s Department.

It was revealed that the 11 deceased inmates had been arrested by police on drug related charges, DIG Ajith Rohana added.

He further stated that a team comprising 25 Criminal Investigations Department officers are conducting further investigations including recording statements from Mahara Prison inmates, prison officials, doctors and health workers at the prison.
