Baby selling racketeer arrested in Matale

An individual has been arrested for engaging in a racket of selling newborn babies after reaching an agreement with pregnant mothers, Police said.

The 47-year-old suspect was arrested following a lengthy investigation carried out by the Police Women and Children’s Bureau.The suspect was arrested in Ukuwela, Matale yesterday.

The suspect had been engaged in the racket by advertising on the internet and the racket had taken place at two locations in the Moratuwa area, Police said. It has been revealed that this person had sold 30 children so far. Police further stated that 12 pregnant women who were involved in this have been identified.

According to police, the suspect had used the internet to reach pregnant mothers including victims of sexual abuse and other helpless pregnant women, in order to get them to come to one of his locations where he runs his business.He was produced before the Moratuwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
