Alphabets denoting provinces to be removed from vehicle number plate

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved to eliminate the alphabets denoting provinces in vehicle number plates.

Both the customers as well as the Department of Motor Traffic have to encounter many difficulties when number plates have to be changed every time the right of ownership of the vehicles are transferred between Provinces. The decision has been taken to ease issues faced by customers and the Department of Motor Traffic when issuing vehicle licence plates.

The letters to identify Provinces are added to the number plate when registering vehicles in order for it to be easy at the vehicular emission tests and annual revenue license issuance.

Under the new system, since a unique number is issued to each registered vehicle at its registration, the identification of each vehicle can be easily recognized across the Departmental data base.
