AG informs IGP: Reduce congestion, grant bail to remandees

Attorney General Dappula De Livera had instructed the IGP to take immediate action and implement a plan to reduce congestion in prisons due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The Attorney General has further instructed the IGP to grant bail to the remanded suspects by Monday, Attorney General's Coordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said.

The Attorney General had directed the IGP to file cases for drug offences on November 9 and 16.

Jayaratne said that the Justice Minister had requested the Attorney General yesterday to take appropriate action as there is an urgent need to reduce the number of prison inmates due to this pandemic.

Accordingly, the Attorney General had instructed the IGP in writing to prepare a new system covering all prisons before December 3 and to take the necessary steps to implement it from next Monday.
